The most common form of heart disease is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy(HOCM). This disease is characterized by thickening of the heart muscle, which decreases the amount of blood pumped out with each beat of the heart. It eventually leads to backing up of fluid into the sack that surrounds the lungs called the pleura, or into the abdomen (ascites).
This disease has been found to be congenital, in breeds such as: Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Cornish Rexes, and others. There is a DNA test available to determine if your kitten has been passed the gene for HOCM, and a blood test to identify cats that are likely to develop or actually have HOCM called the pro BNP.
Symptoms can vary greatly, but include: gagging, lack of appetite, difficulty breathing, increased respiratory rate, and reluctance to move around, even weakening or sudden paralysis of the hind legs.
Diagnosis can be made from careful examination, lab tests, x-rays, ecg, or cardiac ultrasound. Treatment depends on the stage and severity of the disease and generally consists of daily medication to ease the stress on the heart.
Anytime your cat shows change in their behavior, especially labored breathing, you should consult a veterinarian.
