 | | In the modern world cats are primarily fed dry kibble and do not get any moisture in their food, which is what traditionally supplied their fluids. In addition to the fact that actually drinking water does not come naturally to a cat, cats are especially sensitive to the odor and taste of their water. They are so picky about odor that if water doesn't smell right to them (say there is a chlorine or other chemical odor, or another pet has taken a drink from the bowl) they won't touch it. Some people use only bottled water to entice their kitties to drink when giving them wet food would solve the issue.
